Support Reid Honeywell Benefits PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 09 November 2009 09:42

Dear John Muir Community,

One of our John Muir families has been living through a serious cancer crisis within their immediate family. The 19 year old brother of Ginny Cotton (in Camille's class) and Sarah Cotton-Honeywell (graduated from John Muir last spring) was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia early in September. If you would like to support Reid Honeywell and the rest of the Cotton-Honeywell family in amy way, the following letter will offer you information and a starting place. Martha and Pete truly appreciate everyone's love and kindness.

While Reid and his family are learning how to navigate the highs and lows of leukemia, there has been movement in our community to support and help them in various ways.

When Reid was being treated at OHSU, many people offered meals to the family at home, while others drove to Portland to be with Reid and his parents. These many acts of kindness were deeply appreciated.

Then, when Reid returned to the Rogue Valley to continue his treatment closer to home, the support conversation turned to the financial hardship being faced by this family, and how we all might help. This email is a "heads up" about what's going on!

First off, hat's off to Todd Steele and Project A for a community website devoted to Reid. Please visit www.supportreid.org and explore. There is information about helping Reid, and more pages are being developed about leukemia. Knowledge is power.

Next, the Reid Honeywell Leukemia Fund is at People's Bank of Commerce for those among you who would like to help offset the mounting expenses. Donations can be made at any Southern Oregon location of People's Bank, or through the website.

Event-wise, there are three coming up that promise to be wonderful. On Sunday, November 15, the Ashland Soccer Club and fellow sponsors are holding the 1st Annual Futball For Life Soccer Tournament at Ashland MIddle School. All proceeds from this tournament are being donated to the Fund. Sign up your favorite youth soccer team to play - or come on out and cheer for the many kids who love soccer as much as Reid has over the years. Rumor has it, if he feels up to it, Reid may even put on his referee shirt for a few matches!

Next, on Wednesday, Nov. 18, the band Borderline (featuring Reid's aunt Emy, Bob Evoniuck, Sam Cuenca and other local favorite musicians) will be playing a benefit evening at Tease restaurant in Ashland. Tease is encouraging folks to come early for dinner and drinks before the 8 PM show, as they will donate a portion of the evening's total sales to the Fund.

And, if you'd like to have your kids see the Borderline show, bring them to the concert the NEXT night, Thursday, Nov. 19 at 7 PM at Paschal Winery in Talent, where the band will continue their benefit music making on Reid's behalf.

As Martha signs her emails "All will be well, " those of us involved with this effort to support Reid in his survival of cancer believe the words to be true. He is a dynamic life-loving young man with the prayers and support of many friends and community members surrounding him. Thanks for staying involved and holding Reid in your hearts.

In gratitude,

Jim Schlight & The Reid Honeywell Support Team
