October 12, 2010

Attended: Katherine, Tracy P, Aura, Tara, Mary, Tracy H, Pat, Elisa, Peter C, Patti, Camille, Lauren, Joan, Grant, Pauline, Jennie C

AGENDA item: Volunteer Summary–Holiday Committee–Garden Update–Site Council–School Play & Grant–Music Program–Evening PTC Meetings–Fundraising Report – Financial Update

Volunteer Summary Sign-ups from last meeting distributed and discussed. There are forms on the PTC board for folks to fill out and submit to PTC president, Katherine Holden.

ASD Holiday Committee: There has been a committee formed to create district wide policy, it includes reviewing other district's policies and create one for ASD. Meeting again on the 26th. Patti Ruiz is the JMS representative on the committee.

Garden Update: Patti reported that the garden committee has been  happy to have students out in the garden. Community collaboration is great too. Fall and winter gardens are planted or planned. Jobs can be had at anytime, there is a yellow tube in the garden that also has a way for folks to record their volunteer hours. Next Community garden day Oct. 20th

Site Council: Meet for the first time this year, last week. Reviewing goals. There was a great student representation. Focus on ASDs foreign language project, the district is asking site councils to make recommendation. There are 3 styles/systems that are being considered. Pat suggested a 4th option, ASD purchase Rosetta Stone license for whole district/all families.

School Play & Grant: Bianca came to present to the PTC, she is seeking permission and support to do a school play. Peter C. suggested dramatizing vignettes; folks liked that idea, elaboration on student written scripts. Katherine suggested an all school email go out. Lauren said she'd help Bianca meet the drama teacher at AHS and possibly find a senior to take this as a senior project.

Music Program: Elisa acknowledged that Janet & Duane are still adjusting to being part of JMS, and that she is hearing concerns from students and parents as well as folks who are very happy. She has shared suggestions with them about bringing back the old songs, taking suggestions from students, and using the tambourine less. Duane's material and the rock band are good for the olders. Duane is using 10 - ¼ sized violins to teach Pat's class the violin. He hopes to teach whole JMS the violin and bring in high school aged kids to assist. Focus time allows students time for other instruments. Janet's Glee Club is going well. Students & families are welcome to bring in new songs.

Evening PTC meetings: Katherine suggested one evening meeting every few months. Try it and see, if it's the same folks then we know after school is fine. In November the PTC will hold an evening meeting, Tuesday November 9th, 7pm at Katherine's house. 152 Orange Street. There would be no childcare provided.

Fundraising Report: There will be a winter social gathering Winter Festival that could have Art Focus items for sale. Jennie Crain volunteered to help kids make more stuff after school. Friday, Dec 10th. Using hallway for crafting display and snacks. A classroom will be set up for re-gifting, items will be for sale. 8th graders are doing art for stainless steel water bottles to sell. There will be kid made cards for sale too. Next Fundraising Meeting is October 18th after school.

Financial Update: Lauren passed out a report. First month of school provided $300 in Scrip money.
