The sock hop committee met on 3/13/09. Present were Jennifer Crane, Joan Kleen, Pat Scalo, Emy Phelps, Tracy Harding, Anouschka Andresen, Mary Rogan, and Jennie Damon-Tollenaere.
The "handmade, recycled, and services silent auction and raffle" sockhop will be May 15th at the AMS commons. There will be many ways to participate and we hope parents/kids will be inspired to contact any of the coordinators that are mentioned in this email to help with specific aspects. Most importantly show up and have fun!
The super exciting news is that Wolf Black's band "Turpentine" will be opening and closing the event, playing 50's covers.
Grant Ruiz and Emy Phelps will coordinate sound and DJ the rest of the evening. The kids will learn some 50's dances at school and also hopefully have an opportunity to make poodle skirts.
We have begun collecting donations and there are boxes in the staff room if you have items/services (for either the raffle or silent auction) you want to drop off at school. Please ask a staff member to write down a record of the donation and to put it in the appropriate box in staff room.
The last day to donate raffle items will be Wednesday April 15th which gives us time to print tickets and have them available for people to sell by Monday April 20th. Mary Rogan (Bryce's mom - Marcia's class) will be designing and printing raffle tickets.
Pat Scalo will be the coordinator of volunteers making the tickets available to students who want them and collecting money/ticket stubs. Jennifer Crane (Jessie's and Alex's mom - Pat and Camille's class) is the coordinator for any parents and kids who are interested in setting up tables and selling tickets in front of a grocery store.
Steve Rice (Kellen, Jackson, Julian's dad - Pat and Camille's class) has many contacts with downtown businesses and has offered to coordinate efforts to solicit raffle donations. Please contact Steve if you have connections you have already solicited for donations or would like to help him with this aspect. We would like to avoid approaching businesses with multiple requests.
The last day to donate a service or handmade/recycled item for the silent auction is May 1st. Tracy Harding (Stella and Frank's mom - Camille and Marcia's class) will be the coordinator for the silent auction.
We are hoping to have a large offering of home made sweet and savory foods for sale. We would like to eliminate the need for utensils so please make your offerings finger foods. Servings sizes that can be sold for a dollar or two would be ideal. If you donate food please put your name and address on the bottom of the serving plate (for health dept.) and make a label/sign with a list of ingredients for your food item. The committee will provide cloth napkins and washable cups. Joan Kleen (Jack's mom- Camille's class) is the coordinator for food.
We will have a sign up sheet for other ways to volunteer on the day of the event - food sellers, roadies, set up crew, clean up crew... After the event there will also be ways to help - thank you letters to businesses, dispersing raffle prizes...
We encourage kids to come up with some designs for invitations to the sock hop to pass out to businesses, or friends/family outside the JM community, that will share a little about what John Muir School is about. We are looking forward to a super fun night and hope you and your families will all come out to celebrate. Don't forget - May 15th (time to be announced)!
Stay posted for more info and thanks for reading, the sock hop gang
